15:58 Tom Dixon's Design Research Studio Unveils Peninsula Garden
This Spring sees a new public green oasis coming to London in the form of uniquely designed Peninsula Garden. Tom Dixon's Design Research Studio, in collaboration with landscape gardeners Alys Fowler and Thomas Hoblyn, will unveil their first outdoor project at Greenwich Peninsula.Fowler, Hoblyn and Design Research Studio were keen to draw upon the Peninsula's past, before it was developed, to ensure the garden has a strong sense of place. The nautical and industrial history of Greenwich Peninsula provides the team with ample inspiration and a strong narrative to connect all the garden's layers. Visitors to Peninsula Garden will experience a wild garden carefully cultivated to adapt to the changing seasons, which will be overseen and monitored by a Resident Head Gardener. In addition to the open green spaces, an amphitheatre, inspired by the geometry of the Giant's Causeway will programme a diverse calendar of events and a year-round programme for theatre, music, cinema and performance. Linking to Stevie Parle's new restaurant on the Peninsula, Craft London, the Market Garden will supply produce for the kitchens as well as space for Parle and his team to grow and experiment with often rare or hard to find ingredients in close vicinity to the site. Market stalls and seating will be positioned for people to meet and gather during the day and night. "The opportunity to work in the landscape, rather than within an architectural space has challenged us to think on a different scale and provided us with a new palette of materials that change with the season and are subject to the wind, rain and occasional British sunshine. The design of the garden peels back the layers of history, exposing the forms of the original mud flats, reintroducing apples from the market gardens and a palette of material from its industrial and nautical past." – Tom Dixon
