Created by James Lee Byars for the Fondation Cartier in 1995, The Monument to Language is a 3 meter wide gilded bronze sphere.

Yet another celebration of the Fondation Cartier’s anniversary, Patti Smith pays tribute to Artavazd Peleshyan, Joan Mitchell and James Lee Byars – three artists whose personalities and artworks have particularly moved her. After Swans (a tribute to Peleshyan), which took place on July 10, this triptych continues on September 4 and 11.
