Just a few hours from the close of the Hyères
28th International Festival of Fashion and Photography, the fashion competition
jury, headed up by Felipe Oliveira Baptista, ended the suspense by crowning
Finnish designer Satu Maaranen winner of the Première Vision Grand
Jury Prize for 2013!
This edition marks a
turning point for Première Vision, which has been working for three years
alongside the famed festival of young fashion designers.
This year, the
international show of clothing fabrics strengthened its partnership by awarding
the "Grand Jury Prize," since renamed the Première Vision Grand Jury Prize, and
which comes with a 15,000 € prize.
While the sun may have been keeping a low profile in the Var this session,
the flamboyant, collection of the young Finnish designer was a unanimous winner.
It was a triumphant hit with the jury, the international press and the global
fashion professionals gathered at Hyères.
Satu Maaranen, Garment in Landscape
dress in nature? Is it possible to design a collection that takes the
surrounding lanscape into account?" These are some of the questions raised
by the Finnish prize-winner, a graduate of Helsinki's Aalto University, in her
women's collection Garment in Landscape, inspired by Land Art, military
prints and 1960s haute couture.
With a subtle combination of bright colours (orange, intense fuchsias and
yellows, luminous blues) and earth tones (grass or fir-tree greens, mineral or
sandy browns); updated camouflage prints made entirely by hand; astonishing
oversize volumes; and surprising but happy mixes and elaborations of
materials... Satu Maaranen proposes her own original and poetic
vision of Haute Couture.
True to the tradition of innovative designers from
her country, famous for their use of natural materials, she has a distinctive
way of working unusual materials. Some fabrics (silk, cotton, viscose) can thus
be covered in grass, sawdust or sand.
This highly creative collection came to be with the support of Première
Because this year, as every year, the 10 finalists were welcomed to
the February 2013 shows of Première Vision, Expofil and ModAmont. They were put
in direct contact with exhibitors who expressed a desire to collaborate, and
thus benefitted from a privileged access to yarns, fabrics and trims from top
