The railway has played a key role in the history of powered
transport across the world: a history that has inspired men whose love
of trains and team spirit have become legendary. In France, it all began
in 1829, when Engineer Marc Seguin presented the first ever French steam
locomotive in Lyon. Perched atop four large steel-rimmed wheels, the
machine had a revolutionary high-performance tubular boiler that would be
used on steam locomotives all over the world until the railways were
electrified in the late 1950s. A large-scale educational project. A mechanics
teacher and his pupils have recreated Marc Seguin’s locomotive. Mr Gaston Monnier, a mechanics teacher, founded the Association pour la Reconstruction et la Préservation du
Patrimoine Industriel (ARPPI). With high school students and companies, he took seven years
to reconstruct Marc Seguin’s locomotive, working from period sketches, texts
andengravings. For Rétromobile, the first ever French locomotive will be
presented in working order on the central esplanade of the Parc des Expositions
at Porte de Versailles, Paris. 2 centuries after it made its first journey, Marc Seguin can
be seen from 6 to 10 February 2013 at the Parc des Expositions, Porte de Versailles,
Paris. Rétromobile, Eiffage Rail and the Association pour la
Reconstruction et la Préservation du Patrimoine Industriel present the first ever
French locomotive at the Parc des Expositions, Porte de Versailles. Eiffage Rail is a
subsidiary of Eiffage Travaux Publics. It was created to foster the nationwide development
of the company’s railway business, carried out for many years in northern France. The company, which is eager to play a key role in
the French railway market, is already very active in the tram and railway
sidings sector. Along with specialized Eiffage Travaux Publics subsidiaries in
Germany, it is also taking part in the large high speed rail project linking Brittany with the
Pays de la Loire Association pour la Reconstruction et la Préservation du
Patrimoine Industriel. When we seek to showcase our rich industrial heritage, it is
important to select inventions from the 19th century that seem most
representative: those that heralded revolutions in mechanical engineering and
new ways of life for thepublic at large. "Civilization means Transport”, said Rudyard Kipling. Nobody
would deny the truth of his words today. This is why the ARPPI was
founded: to reconstruct and preserve the
ancestors of transport civilization. Press/image Rétromobile | |
