The Steven and Dorothea Green Critics’ Lecture Series announces the launch of its 34th season at Patricia and Phillip Frost Art Museum FIU with guest-lecturer Melissa Chiu’s presentation of “Making A Museum in the 21st Century” on Wednesday, March 4 at 6:00 p.m.
Dr. Chiu is the new director of the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, D.C. The lecture will take place at the museum’s Room 107, with a reception immediately following (both are free and open to the public) located at 10975 S.W. 17 Street in Miami. Since 1981, the Green Critics’ Lecture Series has presented internationally renowned artists, museum directors, scholars, critics and cultural luminaries including Christo, Susan Sontag, Frank Stella, Marina Abramovic and
George Segal. “The mission and purpose of museums have changed enormously over the past fifty years,” says Dr. Chiu.
“The most pressing questions for museums today involve ideas of transition and transformation. The evolution from an archival approach to an interactive one." "There is great potential for museums to become crucial to creativity and innovation, highly regarded qualities in the 21st century," adds Chiu. "As they negotiate the shifting environment of a new world, how can museums become key to the social fabric of their cities and regions, and to the people who call them home?” Chiu completed her PhD at the University of Western Sydney, focusing on Chinese contemporary art in the diaspora. At the Hirshhorn she oversees a staff of 50 and a collection of nearly 12,000 objects.
She previously served as the director of the Asia Society Museum since 2004. Before that she was the curator for contemporary Asian and Asian American art at the Asia Society, since 2001. "We are delighted that Melissa Chiu will participate as an honored speaker in the Steven and Dorothea Green Critics' Lecture Series,” said the Frost Art Museum’s Director, Dr. Jordana Pomeroy. “The series has attracted luminaries in the art world ranging from Phillipe de Montebello to Pierre Rosenberg, directors emeriti of the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Louvre, respectively. As the new director of the Hirshhorn, Chiu is well positioned to provide insight into the state of art museums in the 21st century," said Dr. Jordana Pomeroy. #News Travels Fast
