Volkswagen, which now owns legendary names like Porsche and Bugatti, has been responsible for some of the most influential and iconic automobiles of the last century. When the award winning Volkswagen Design Group decided to collaborate with Fortis Watches to create an all-new high-tech chronograph, the watch world took notice.

The Fortis Spaceleader Chronograph by Volkswagen Design didn’t disappoint. The innovative timepiece started winning design awards before it even went on sale. In quick succession, the Spaceleader was the recipient of the coveted iF Product Design Award, the prestigious Red Dot Design Award, and the Chicago Athenaeum Museum’s Good Design Award. The basis for these high-profile awards was quite simply the watch itself.

By incorporating the latest automotive design concepts in this innovative new chronograph watch, Volkswagen designers managed to create something truly unique. The tactile rubber strap is completely integrated with the highly polished stainless steel case, completely covering the top portion of the slim polished bezel.   

This one-of-a-kind asymmetrical design is unlike anything you have seen before. Instead of small pusher buttons, the chronograph functions are actuated using broad, flange shaped appendages on either side of a knurled winding crown. This arrangement makes it exceptionally easy to time events, even while driving. Instead of painted, luminescent hands like most watches, the entire dial glows an electric blue when dark.

The oversized 43 mm case showcases a deeply recessed ultra-modern dial with three easy-to-read sub dials, along with a convenient day-date window at 3 o’clock. An anti-reflective sapphire crystal protects the stylish display and the entire watch is water resistant to 330 feet. Powering this virtuoso design is a precision, Swiss-made ETA 7750 automatic movement with a 42-hour power reserve.
